CORRECT WAY OF READING A TEXTBOOK/CHAPTER

These are 5 Steps for efficient reading and remembering a theory or a practical subject. These steps help me a lot, hope you will find them helpful too.

Step 1: Understanding the title

Have you ever tried a new snack without looking at its wrapper? What first thing you do when you pick an item from the shelf, what it is, what are all its ingredients?

Most people never bother what the title of the chapter is trying to depict. They just hop on the text and start reading it. You should first ask yourself, why the author or writer has chosen the specific name because the crux of the chapter is in its title only. The whole chapter revolves around its title itself. It doesn’t matter whether it is theoretical or a practical subject, try to understand the title first.

Step 2: Overviewing the Chapter

This is a very important step in efficient reading. If you know well in advance what are you going to study and why are you studying that, then it would become very easy for you to remember it. On knowing the background of the topic, it became very convenient to understand the whole stuff easily. For this step, you can make use of the YOUTUBE videos, where you can watch the introduction of the chapter or textbook.

Step 3: Create a linkage between sub-topics

Do you still remember those Disney fairytales? Wondering why! because you know what happens and when. The same thing is with the chapter if you are able to connect the dot via linking those sub-topics, it will become a story for you that could not be forgotten. Every sub-topic is created to make learning simple. If you can connect them then it can bring wonders.

Step 4: Start reading the text

After doing all the above steps now the time is for the most crucial part i.e., “reading”. Consider it your first reading and try to resolve each and every query in it only. Make sure no doubt should leave behind. Along with this try not to cram and learn the stuff, since it’s your first reading. Just read it as your favorite story and try to make an impression out of it. Also, keep in your mind you are not reading this for the short-term, but learning it for the long-term. So, whenever you are reading something always read it with a practical perspective. This will help you in developing better skills and understanding.

Step 5: Solving questions

Most people neglect this part, but this is like a football goal for you. Your success fruit is waiting here. This step will give you building confidence in how well you have understood the chapter and how much you remember. As soon as you finish up reading at least read the questions. This will give you a rough idea of which of the topic is being focused on by a writer or author.

Some useful “TIPS”

  1. Try to read the textbook or chapter as soon as possible. Don’t take more than 2 days otherwise, it will be very hard to connect or keep up with it.

2. Make sure you give at least 2–3 reading for better remembrance.
